Descrizione: ESPANYA AL DIA [SPAIN TODAY], Laya Films newsreel produced during the Spanish Civil War made up of the following news reports: 1. BARCELONA. FASCICLE DE LA PREMSA Images of a meeting between the body of professional journalists and commissioner of propaganda, Jaume Miravitlles, during a publishing event for a copy of the 'La Presse Catalane' [Catalan Press] book. The narrator notes that this book was published in order to be distributed to the world through the press stand at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition. 2. BARCELONA. PARTIT DE FOOT-BALL (sic) PER A LA COPA ESPANYA Images showing the match between Levante CF and Valencia CF played at the RCD Espanyol ground (Can Ràbia, Sarria) for the final of the Spanish Cup. We see images of the players of both teams, as well as the players making their way out onto the field and a few actions. Shots are also shown of the crowd. 3. BARCELONA. TEATRE CLÀSSIC AL RECINTE DE MONTJUIC (sic) Images of a performance of the play ANTIGONE by Sophocles, translated by Carles Riba, being performed at the Greek Theatre in Barcelona. Images show the performance and the audience. The narrator notes that the performance has been organised by the Propaganda Commission as part of the fundraising week organised by the Catalan Aid foundation. 4. VIATGE PRESIDENCIAL Government of Catalonia president, Lluís Companys, accompanied by Jaume Miravitlles, visits a barracks in Barbastro, where he samples the food being prepared for the soldiers. In Sarinyena, he visits the Ales Roges [Red Wings] aerodrome and presides over a parade. He is shown visiting Alcañiz and its castle. 5. BRUNETE. DESPRÈS (sic) DE LA CONQUESTA Images of Brunete after the Republican Army victory. Destroyed buildings, bodies of soldiers and civilians in the fields, fortification works on the outskirts of the town. 6. MADRID. TROFEUS DE LA VICTÒRIA ARRABASSATS A L'ENEMIC Images of a political rally held in a cinema in Madrid. Members of the Central Army and the International Brigades are in attendance. Flags and objects captured from the enemy are displayed. Writer, Rafael Alberti, and Popular Army officer, Hans Khale, display flags that have been captured and a militiaman displays a colonel's uniform. The crowd stand with their fists raised. 7. EL PRESIDENT D'EUSCADI (sic), HOSTE D'HONOR DE CATALUNYA. Official visit of Lehendakari, José Antonio Aguirre, to Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War in July 1937. His plane lands at Reus airport, where he is welcomed by government ministers, Carles Pi i Sunyer and Antoni Mª Sbert, with soldiers also shown in formation and on parade. They get into the waiting cars and head for Barcelona, led by a motorcycle escort. Shots of the convoy en route. They pass through Arc de Berà and stop in Tarragona, Arboç, Vilafranca del Penedès, Vallirana, Cervelló and Molins. On arrival in Barcelona, the Lehendakari is officially welcomed by Hilari Salvadó, the Mayor of Barcelona. In Plaça Sant Jaume, he is also honoured with a display of the Catalan Police Force presenting arms and is received by Lluís Companys. 8. BARCELONA. AGRESSIÓ DELS VAIXELLS PIRATES Images of the destruction caused by naval bombing on Barcelona. Shelled buildings, trees knocked down and broken pavements are shown while people look on. A group of workers clear and fix the damage. The narrator points out that the bombing comes in the wake of similar attacks on Tarragona, Cambrils, Palamos, Portbou, Llavaneres and Mataro, while Tortosa has come under attack from aerial bombing by the Ales Negres [Black Wings] air squadron.
